Nasty Rumor About Dell Dropping Ubuntu Untrue
On Tuesday, 06 November 2007, 5:47 PM INQUIRER Newsdesk reported that Dell was dropping Ubuntu. They stated that they contacted Dell and that Dell said "It has been discontinued" So I thought I would contact them myself. I was told that they are working on some changes to the site and the systems it will be offered on.
What kind of reporting is this. Its a sad world when a big site like that gets all the facts wrong.

Ubuntu Security Alert Nov 7 2007
Alin Rad Pop discovered that CUPS did not correctly validate buffer
lengths when processing IPP tags. Remote attackers successfully
exploiting this vulnerability would gain access to the non-root CUPS user
in Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, 6.10, and 7.04. In Ubuntu 7.10, attackers would be
isolated by the AppArmor CUPS profile.
The problem can be corrected by upgrading your system to the
following package versions:
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS:
cupsys 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.6.06.4
Ubuntu 6.10:
cupsys 1.2.4-2ubuntu3.1
Ubuntu 7.04:
cupsys 1.2.8-0ubuntu8.1
Ubuntu 7.10:
cupsys 1.3.2-1ubuntu7.1
In general, a standard system upgrade is sufficient to affect the
necessary changes.

Everex launches $198 Ubuntu Linux gPC at Wal-Mart
The system will be offered by Wal-Mart on Beginning November 1. I can not find out if it will only be there on-line store or there retail outlets.
the specs are
1.5GHz, VIA C7-D processor
512MB of system memory
80GB hard disk drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW optical drive
six USB 2.0 ports
RJ45 Ethernet port
RJ11 port
serial and parallel port
For graphics, it uses a VIA UniChrome Pro chipset on the motherboard. This, in turn, uses 64MB of system memory
No monitor included the cheapest monitor at Wal-Mart is $150 brining the entire system price to $348 dollars
Everex decided to use Enlightenment instead of gnome as its inerface. there reasoning is the hardware requirements are lower.
While this seems this is a good way for Ubuntu to get to the masses . The fact that they used Enlightenment might hurt them, because Enlightenment uses very radical and unique concepts which require a little bit of patience to learn.
But we will just have to wait and see
